A Free Week in Door County

We were on vacation last week in beautiful Door County, Wisconsin. There are many things to do here, including eating. With several “Wine Spectator” recommended restaurants, how you could you go wrong? I have to admit to fretting at first. I panicked because I couldn’t find whole wheat tortillas at the small town grocery store. I was off my schedule of eating three meals and three snacks a day. The others I was with just didn’t eat that often.

I gave myself permission to let go. Couldn’t remember the last time I’ve had fried food, let alone fried southwestern eggrolls. Yum. I let myself eat a hamburger–and enjoy it. Now before I give the impression it was all eating, I was exercising a lot. My usual 12,000 steps a day turned into 15,000+ with biking and swimming in between. I was active from morning to night. It was great! I felt like I earned the cheating.

So, now I’m back. I’m ready to exercise, eat right. I’m back on the health wagon. I weighed myself today, fearing the worse. Guess what? I gained nothing. I’m still where I was before the cheat week. What’s more, I truly believe this will be the jump start I needed. Yea! for vacations!

No Joy Geocaching

We made a random decision to go on out on the hunt yesterday. It was getting a bit late, but it was light enough. We first made for the geocache we didn’t find last week. As luck would have it, there was one on the same road, but before it. We would have it, someone was parked there, so we preceded down the road for the original quest.

I can see why some may have thought the directions were not great. It really wasn’t at the end of the road. It was a turnoff. Coincidentally, we had been boating near this very spot earlier that day. I was able to get good coverage on my GPSr. We honed in on the published coordinates. Unfortunately, the place was trashed. Seeing as this cache had a history of being muggled, or blundered by non-geocachers, we figured this might be the case again. No joys. Log a DNF–a Did Not Find.

We headed back to the first cache. It was getting close to dusk at this point. We again honed in on the area quickly, but fading light made this geocache elusive too. Not the best of days, but you’ll have that. We did retrieve a travel bug to help send on his way. A travel bug is a trackable item that travels cache to cache. Some have a purpose or mission. Others just travel. I have the perfect spot for this one.

More Finds While Geocaching

We went out geocaching again on Sunday. The weather was questionable, but we decided to give it a go. Our first two finds were in town. The first was a microcache, micro in meaning a small find rather than a larger ammo box. I was really stumped with this one. My husband eventually found it, hidden. (I don’t want to be a spoiler and give the exact location.) A half hour and I thought this was going to be an easy one.

The next one was located pretty close to the first. It was in an area that had seen some recent development, so the concern was that it would not be there anymore. The GPSr took us close. A GPSr is geocaching lingo for GPS unit. The cache was in plain view and it wasn’t. You had to know that you were looking for something to spot it. Since the first one had been in a film canister, spotting the second also in a film canister made it an easy find. Five minutes on this one.
