Trail Blazing For a Cardio Workout

2613361149 15a83d3e8b Trail Blazing For a Cardio WorkoutCardio is definitely easier if you have a partner to motivate you.  My husband and I combine our geocaching and our walking to get that cardio workout in.

This past weekend we were out in the field again.  My love of walking off trail gets us off trail.  My husband’s search for the “easy” way takes us off trail.  And that’s where we were this weekend, searching for a couple elusive geocaches.

For those not familiar with geocaching, it is a high tech treasure hunt, using posted coordinates and a GPS unit.  The fun is in the find.  The find can just be the act of signing a log.  It can be the exchange of small trinkets.  For me, it’s the discovery of new parks and places that I would never have found before.

Our Saturday adventure took us to three geocaches, walking three miles, over the course of two hours.  My husband’s read of the topo map took us to areas only known to deer and escaped convicts, the real woods.

Hikers know this, but trying to negotiate hills and obstacles of all sorts makes it a more intense workout.  Well developed core muscles help with balance.  Add to the mix a light dusting of snow over frozen ground and you have a killer workout.

Despite the fact that my quads objected to the trek, at least we got out–both of us–and enjoyed a good walk.  What activities do you and your significant other share in?

Give In To Your Desires–Go Ahead and Nap

2722656894 03e377d575 Give In To Your Desires Go Ahead and NapA combination of cloudy November days and winter moving in, makes me want to give into that most luxurious of treats–a nap.

While some tend to view it as laziness, to give in to your desires and take nap allows you to reset your brain and face the rest of the day. What torture it is to fight to stay awake. If you’re not the napping kind of person, here’s a website for you, NapSounds.

Using sounds and guided imagery, you are led gently down the path to sleep and recharging your mental–and physical–batteries. While we live as modern people, our body is still hardwired for a past life.  Relaxing when your body desires it is not bad, it’s not wrong.  It is merely your physiology making itself heard.

Compare your senses to a fuse box.  Fuses are meant to go out to prevent serious core damage.  Your senses work the same way.  You feel hungry before you are weakened by it.  You feel pain as a warning to remove the danger.  You feel tired when your body needs rest.  It could be rest from stress, from physical activity, from an onset of a cold or illness.  Your body is always working for you.  Listen to it.

You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby

1101033 64266738 Youve Come a Long Way, BabyThe other day I watched PBS’s American Experience documentary on Oswald’s Ghost.  Compelling viewing if nothing else.

There was a curious scene, the story itself aside, that both me and my husband remarked upon.  I was even tweeting about it on Twitter.  There’s a scene where Abraham Zapruder is being interviewed about his historic film.  The newscaster interviewing him is, on the air, smoking with an ashtray in full view.

My husband being around at the time and at an age where he can remember it today, recalls how common it was.  According to him, even his doctor smoked during his annual exams as a kid.

Ever watch those old classic film noirs? The movie, Double Indemnity, comes to mind.  The movie revolves around smoking.  Now I ask, haven’t we done a complete about face on this issue?

You can’t smoke in a public building in the entire state of Minnesota, many others for that matter.  The newscasters don’t smoke, at least on the air.  The doctors don’t smoke, at least in the exam room.  We’ve made some great strides.  Pat yourselves on the back.  You’ve come a long way, baby.
