Everything I Learned About Life I Learned While Playing Monopoly

2366892707 c78f93d4fb Everything I Learned About Life I Learned While Playing MonopolyAn interesting story comes from BBC news magazine, which suggest that life lessons can be gleaned from playing board games.

As the article suggests, games like Monopoly teach us the the skills we need to succeed in life such as patience.  Remember those marathon Monopoly or Life games?

Think of the wonderful interaction in a game like Pictionary where you’re trying to read your partner’s thoughts, hoping they travel the same dark waters that yours do.

I’ve always have been a fan of the traditional board games.  Even on my Blackberry, I play my favorites like Scrabble and cribbage.  I enjoy the challenge.  Sure there’s some luck thrown in for good measure, but there’s still the strategy part of it.  You can’t play spades without having some clue about how to plan your next move.  As for chess, don’t you have to be a genius to play that game?

With so many movies and games spoon feeding us, it’s refreshing to come back to the classics.  Patience. Diplomacy.  Strategy.  Everything I learned about life, I learned while playing Monopoly.Photo by frankblacknoir

Stay Warm When Winter Says No

426155665 ea1ddbe74c 300x199 Stay Warm When Winter Says NoNot that I want an excuse not to take my daily walk, but when the temperature stays below zero and the windchill is in the double digits, I know it’s best to avoid the outdoors. No matter what though, I’m determined to stay warm when winter says no.

Now is not the time to avoid carbs.

Your body needs fuel to stay warm. Now is not the time to go Atkins. Of course, this isn’t license to go overboard, but rather to be sensible about your diet.

Eat frequent, small meals.

Keep that internal furnace stoked. Small meals keep your body in fuel-burning mode, best for trying to stay warm.

If you must venture out, hats and gloves are mandatory.

Now is not the time to be concerned about your hair. Frostbite is not only dangerous, but painful, very painful. Don’t risk your ears, your fingers, or your toes. In case your exposure outside put you at risk, this first aid guide for frostbite will help you with treatment.

Don’t forget your pets.

Your pets can get frostbite just like you. With all the holiday hoopla, it’s easy to forget that they’re still outside, barking up a storm. Kennel them, put them in the basement, anything but leave them out in the cold.

Since we have such little exposure (no pun intended) to real life dangers, it can be easy to overlook the serious risk of frigid temperatures. For your own safety, use common sense. It’s okay to take the workout indoors and stay warm when winter says no. Photo by laszlo-photo
