Complications of High Blood Pressure

Ever since I’ve been diagnosed with high blood pressure, I’ve been conscious of making positive changes in my life. One change is exercise.

My husband and I have started walking. Each night when he comes home, we take a short 20-minute walk. It’s a good time to talk and unwind. I typically have spent the day writing, sitting in a chair. The active time relieves some stress. The best part about it is that it is so motivating for both of us to walk together.

I have to admit being a little spooked about having high blood pressure. Both my parents had it. I’ve read about risk factors such as retinal vein occlusion that frankly, are very frightening. It makes you respect the added trauma you put on your body when your circulatory system is impacted. The thought that my vision, however, could be affected was surprising.

So, along with the exercise, I’ve begun yoga and meditation. I guess I never realized the stress that I was under. Hopefully, now that I’ve quit the day job (thank goodness!), my stress will abate somewhat.

I feel very motivated. I’m hoping that my doctor will be pleased with my progress when I go back in for my follow-up next week.

National Walk in the Park Day—March 30

grosbeak thumb National Walk in the Park Day—March 30 Today is a day worth celebrating for both your physical and mental health. Welcome to National Walk in the Park Day!

For me, this is the type of walking. I walk in the neighborhood and to town, but I don’t particularly like either one. It’s okay. I prefer the solitude and the sound of birds singing in the woods. It is like meditating as I fall into a rhythmic pace, swinging my arms to and fro.

I enjoy everything about it. During this time of year, I’m always looking for signs of spring wildflowers. Then, there are the birds, especially the spring warblers and my personal favorite, the rose-breasted grosbeak. Its song is one of the most beautiful you will ever hear while walking, at least I think so.

When stress is wearing you down or the job that you hate, forget all of that for a time. Enjoy the parks, the woods, the birds, and the freedom of being outside. It is Nature’s best medicine.

You Can Eat Fried Foods, But….

friedtempura thumb You Can Eat Fried Foods, But…. This month’s issue of Cooking Light magazine debunked several myths about the foods that we eat. For example, eggs are not our enemy. You can eat them without fears of raising your cholesterol. Another of the myths concerned fried food.

As this article points out, there is a right way and a wrong way to fry foods. Temperature is critical, with 375 degrees being optimal. Your ingredients to bread or batter your food are critical as well. You want to use a gluten-containing flour as well as baking soda or a carbonated liquid to reduce fat absorption.

The article is well laid out, with clear explanations about many of the myths that continue to persist. Definitely, worth a look.

Tonight, we had fried cod, using the magazine’s recipe. It was delicious. Best of all, it was not greasy. We didn’t have that feeling of a coated tongue after eating our fish and hush puppies. It was outstanding.

The take-home message is you can have fried foods if you prepare them. You can make sure that oil absorption is minimal. Break out the peanut oil! It’s time for fish and chips!
