Spice It Up with Some Salsa

salsa thumb Spice It Up with Some Salsa As if we need a month to celebrate it. Nothing sounds better on a hot summer evening than a cold one and some salsa and chips. Welcome to National Salsa Month!

The wonderful thing about salsa is that it celebrates fresh ingredients like tomatoes, onion, and jalapenos. With chips, it is a great social snack. What can be more fun than sharing a plate of nachos with friends or family?

Salsa is one of those foods in which you can have so much fun creating variations. Like the heat? Add the jalapenos! Want to showcase the tomatoes? Try making salsa with heirloom tomatoes for added color and flavor.

Don’t let this month’s celebration go by. Break out the chips and the beer! It’s time to spice it up!

Watch Your Back

pansy thumb Watch Your Back Now that spring is finally here, you are probably spending more time in your garden. Nothing boosts your mood or adds quick color than planting some annuals. You probably are also raking and weeding so that your perennials can make their annual appearance. If this is the first time you’ve been in the garden, it is more important than ever to watch your back.

You can trigger back pain by bad posture and sudden movements. The act of raking can twist your body in ways you may not have done in a while. If you’re like me, you hate to leave a job unfinished. In the garden, you may find yourself putting in extra hours of physical work which you may not normally do.

In order to avoid pain, first of all, take it easy. Give your body time to adjust to gardening again. Avoid bending over at the waist as much as possible. Rather, squat down and pick up your tray of pansies. If you feel pain, stop what you are doing. Do not work through pain.

Pain, especially back pain, is so debilitating. It affects everything you do. According to Men’s Health, most times you will recover from back pain. However, who wants the recovery time?

Hit the Bike Trail

bike thumb Hit the Bike Trail This week is the perfect time to hit the bike trail. Welcome to National Bike Month!

I have to admit that I walk more than I bike. It’s the nature lover in me. During the spring, my eyes are fixed on the ground as I look for new spring wildflowers—and morels this time of year.

Biking, however, has its place. The wind blowing through my hair is refreshing. I like the feeling of pushing myself by biking miles. It’s a great workout for your quads that is non-weight bearing. It burns almost 300 calories an hour for a 160-pound person. It has a lot going for it.

I equate biking with running. It gives you an endorphin rush that is hard to resist. It challenges you. It can be a tough workout. For me, it is a nice change of pace cardio. With more and more trails being developed, there is no excuse not to celebrate and hit the bike trail.
