Use the Flavor of Spices

If you follow the recommendations of the DASH diet, you realize the importance of reducing salt in your diet. Today, celebrates the premise of this diet. Welcome to National More Herbs, Less Salt Day!

We often use salt to enhance flavor. However, herbs can accomplish the same purpose. The problem with salt is a matter of balance. Your body will attempt to create the same concentration of solutes and solution in your body fluids as is in your blood.

If you consume a lot of salt, your body will retain more water and thus increase the volume of your blood. The more blood your circulatory system works with, the more it will have to work, thus increasing blood pressure. The concept then of finding ways to replace salt is a valid one.

Take this day as an opportunity to explore your cooking realm. Fresh spices add different nuances to your cooking that may be preferable to salt. Use today as an excuse to give it a try.

Barefoot Lifestyle

barefoot thumb Barefoot Lifestyle After reading a great deal about the barefoot lifestyle, I decided to give it a go myself. My first step was purchasing a Kigo shoes.

The premise behind using shoes that replicate the barefoot way of walking is that it is healthier for you. Proponents claim that modern-day footwear ignores thousands of years of evolution. From that perspective, it makes sense. Ill-fitting shoes have certainly caused their share of foot, back, and posture problems.

There’s a certain freedom in ditching shoes or at least feeling as if you did. My experience was very favorable. The shoes felt like I was wearing a pair of aqua socks. The fit is snug and lightweight. Unfortunately, that precludes there use during colder times of the year.

The first few days was a bit of an initiation. While I walk barefoot indoors all the time, it is a different thing to walk barefoot for longer periods of time. Your feet will get tired at first. After getting used to them, they are a joy to walk in. They are so comfortable that I feel as if I’m not wearing anything on my feet.

If you’re thinking about making the move to a barefoot lifestyle, give it a try. It’s a comfortable way to explore your world.

Stay Up to Date on Your Shots

syringe thumb Stay Up to Date on Your Shots No one likes shots. I personally hate the aches and pains from an intramuscular shot. Darn it, it hurts! Yet, keeping up on your vaccinations is an easy way to prevent disease. Welcome to National Immunization Awareness Month!

The diseases for which we have vaccines available are preventable. There is no reason anyone should come down with polio, measles, or even swine flu. Immunizations exist to protect you.

There are certain times when you should make sure that you are up to date. These include:

  • Travel outside of the United States
  • Going to college
  • Have other risk factors such as immune system deficiencies
  • Seniors

Vaccinations can easily be incorporated into your annual exam. You are doing that, of course? For the wee bit of discomfort of vaccinations, you avoid the debilitating effects of disease. It is so easy to safeguard your health. Take the opportunity to do so.
