Like many of you, I have my own goals for the upcoming year. I love the energy of the new year with everyone hopeful for making positive changes in their life. Here are my goals for 2011 which I will blog about occasionally during the year:
Reduce blood pressure to normal range to ditch blood pressure meds
Run the “Making Tracks for Celiacs” run in May
Get to my ideal weight
Blog regularly
I like it that my goals support other goals. When I move forward on one, I am progressing on another.
I’m sure everyone has read about Haleigh Cummings, the missing Florida girl. Heartbreaking news, to be sure. Stories like this re-enforce the idea that the world is a scary place. One is left wondering how to stay safe. Knowledge is key.
The disturbing part about Haleigh’s disappearance is the number of sex offenders in the area. While all have been interviewed as of this writing, you can’t help but wonder and grieve with her tortured parents. Yes, it is scary. The question follows, what can we do to protect ourselves, our children from danger?
Knowledge is power. Knowledge provides us with the tools to make good choices. information is readily available. It behooves us to know our neighborhood and its threats.
The other day I learned that a level 3 sex offender is moving to a nearby town. Minnesota defines level 3 as a convicted sex offender that is at high risk to commit again. I don’t have any answers, but certainly this small town doesn’t deserve this enormous burden. The parents don’t. The children don’t.
As citizens, we must take up the challenge to educate ourselves. We must teach our children caution and common sense. I hate to think of any stranger as a possible threat. I hate to think of distrust. However, experience has a different lesson. With knowledge, we can take the first steps to staying safe.
Here’s something to mull over your morning coffee. Researchers at the University of Colorado have found a link between and how you view your peers.
Asking for a raise? Brew up some coffee. Having to break some bad news to the missus? Brew up some coffee. Want that diamond tennis bracelet for Christmas? Brew up some coffee.
While the debate about the health benefits of coffee continues, it is a strong antioxidant. And while it can temporarily raise blood pressure, it also increases accuracy when typing or other manual tasks.
Not that I needed any more reasons to indulge, but seeing as I have to tell my husband about the dent in the fender I got at the grocery store, I think I’m going to brew some coffee. Photo by Ahmed Rabea
