Music Effect on Drinking

An interesting study came from French researchers, showing a link between loud music and the rate of drinking. Loud music, according to research, increases the amount and frequency of drinking by patrons at establishments playing such music. Hmm-mm, I thought. It makes sense. I think people don’t always realize how powerful and aware their brain is even if they’re not. I looked to myself for examples.

The other day, my husband and I ate dinner in a lovely Italian restaurant. Over a glass of wine, we enjoyed the ambiance of this dark, quiet place. We sipped our wine slowly and discussed the events of the day. Sure, wine does encourage lingering, but then I thought about another restaurant we used to frequent, Chipotle.

Don’t get me wrong–the food is good. They’re are healthy options too. The problem is the ambiance, specifically the music. The restaurant we went to anyway plays this ghastly loud, fast, nerve-wracking music. I theorized that it was chosen purposely to get patrons to eat quickly and get out. The place is usually so busy, with people waiting outside. It made sense. The faster you get then in and out, the more money you make. That’s where I think this French study has merit.

All of this adds another twist to the idea of making good choices for a healthy lifestyle. Not only is the food you eat important, but the atmosphere in which you do it. Certainly that can’t be done in an atmosphere that includes music that sets the heart racing. Something to consider when planning your next meal at home.
