Skip the Take Out

2393418680 8e10f14d2a m Skip the Take OutAs if high calorie counts weren’t enough reason to keep you at home, now there is the high fuel costs making that take out dinner not quite the bargain it once was. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, food cost rose by 6.3% in the first five months of 2008 compared to the 5% for all of 2007. That’s significant and that hurts.

Four dollars a gallon for gas seems to be America’s break point for gas. Higher prices are starting to trickle down, sometimes significantly. That’s where an at-home meal can help. It’s cheaper to cook at home, if you think about it.  Just compare the cost at the grocery store of something pre-packaged and ready-to-eat versus one you prepare yourself. There are other advantages to in addition to cost.

Control. You can control how much fat, how much salt, how much of everything goes into your food. No more picking out the olives of your quesadilla because you don’t like them. ; My husband and I are boaters. We adore boating. Part of the ritual, as it were, of the weekend trips is to eat out. The crowds. The docking. The parking meters at the dock (yes, it’s happened). So, we’ve taken to lunch on the boat.

It’s lovely. Waterside dining. A nice bottle of wine. A nicely prepared meal. Just the other day we had a lovely crab salad over spring greens with a chipotle-lime dressing served with a Pinot Grigio. Cost:  $14. I tell you, it doesn’t get much better than that.

Nutritional Supplements–Part 2

A few more nutritional supplements are part of my health regime. One supplement that I’ve received great benefit from is magnesium. In the past, I’ve been plagued by migraines. Flashes of light like sunshine off of a car were my trigger. At work, I sit facing the windows. When the afternoon sun would strike the cars in the parking lot, I was scrambling to lower the blinds, much to the chagrin of my co-workers. I just didn’t want to experience another migraine. That’s when I read about the connection between magnesium and migraines. Apparently, low levels of magnesium can cause migraines. What the heck? I started taking magnesium over a year ago and I haven’t had a migraine since. Magnesium has other benefits too, such as helping with symptoms of PMS, reducing severity of asthma attacks.

Another supplement that I take is green tea. I have to admit that I didn’t start taking it for its antioxidant value, but rather for claims about its aid in fat metabolism. I was pleasantly surprised to learn of its other benefits such as lowering cholesterol and reducing blood pressure. These two factors are of special concern to me, with a family history of heart disease.

Another supplement I recently started taking is grapeseed extract. There are several benefits of this supplement. It can reduce eye strain, important since I’m on the computer so much. It lessens allergy symptoms. Unfortunately, my symptoms have become worse in recent months, the bane of being allergic to pet dander and working in a vet clinic.

As with all supplements, I review them carefully on the WholeHealthMD website. I only take supplements that are considered safe and have no known interactions with other drugs or supplements.

Nutritional Supplements — Part 1

Through my readings, I’ve learned about the benefits of nutritional supplements to my diet. Through trial and error, I’ve developed a plan of daily supplements that I take that I feel enhance my fitness and provide added benefits to my overall well being. In the course of three blog posts, I’ll discuss the supplements I take and why.

First of all, many supplements are accompanied by claims, some true and some a stretch of that truth or a spin on a would-be benefit. Before I started taking any supplement, I reviewed its application and guidelines for use on WholeHealthMD. I was especially interested in any side effects and drug interactions. Indeed, WholeHealthMD is my definitive source.

The first item in my arsenal is a multi-vitamin. Lots out there to be sure, but the one product that I’ve taken for years now and have been quite happy with is American Health–More Than a Multiple For Women. A number of facts sold me on this choice. It is formulated for women, for one. It is time release, so I can enjoy the benefits throughout the day. It is higher in calcium than most multiples and goes down easy. This is a multi-dose vitamin, but the supplements tend to follow that path too, so I didn’t see it as a drawback. It gives me natural energy and pep. I can feel the increase in my metabolism.

Now onto the supplements. These are not in any particular order. The first on my list is co enzyme Q 10. My attention was drawn here after my husband was treated for angina. He takes it to complement the statin drug he takes as well as to support his heart. I take it frankly to help with weight loss and to control blood pressure. I don’t have high blood pressure, but it does run in my family.

Next on my list of supplements is cranberry.  Its benefits in prevention of urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women is known as is its help in recovery from UTIs. Another benefit is known for dental health. Cranberry has been document to prevent gum disease.

Next, a look at supplements that can help with PMS and metabolism.
