Vacation Days

There’s nothing like a vacation to jump start weight loss efforts and get back on track. We just returned from a lovely stay in Door County, Wisconsin. Vacation and relaxation were not synonymous this time around. We tent camped. To get to town, we walked or we biked. Even to visit the restroom was a quarter mile round trip. It was bliss.

I wore my pedometer to keep track of steps. With my work in web site design, I had become more sedentary than I’d like. During vacation, I was logging 13,000+ steps routinely. There was also the occasional 17,000+ steps. Combine that with sleeping near the water, falling asleep to waves crashing on the beach and I guess you could call it relaxing. It was an elixir for this stressed mind.

Usually on vacation, the emphasis tends to be on food. This year was no exception, but there was also moderation. The only real sweets I indulged in was my first taste of key lime pie. My sisters were appalled at the fact that I hadn’t tasted it yet, being connoisseurs of the decadence themselves. It’s a good thing, I suppose, that I don’t have a sweet tooth.

We’re back now. The lake outside seems so small compared to Lake Michigan. I’m longing for cedar-scented breezes and endless horizons. Oh, to be on vacation.

Vacation Blues

First there was vacation. This was my first opportunity to see my sisters in six months, some over a year. Of course, being as it was vacation and all, I fell off the food wagon, but I did stay active, logging upwards of 15,000+ steps a day with bike riding not included. I did well there and the damage was minimal.

Then there were the house guests. I guess I’m a little weird in that I have my set schedule and I want to stick too it. Hard to do with guests with their own agendas and kids to boot. Oh, well.

I’m hoping that after the holiday I can bet back on track. I so don’t want to lose the nice muscle definition I’ve gained. I do know that I have work to do, lots of cardio to record. No excuses. I have a club membership if the weather gets too hot. There are free weights and an exercise ball at home.

Those of you who are boaters may relate. Once that boat gets on the water, all you want to do is go out, enjoy the water. There’s swimming now that it’s warmer, but there are also margaritas and dining out. Challenges, to be sure! Here’s where I have to rein things in and use that strong will power of mine. Wish me luck.

A Free Week in Door County

We were on vacation last week in beautiful Door County, Wisconsin. There are many things to do here, including eating. With several “Wine Spectator” recommended restaurants, how you could you go wrong? I have to admit to fretting at first. I panicked because I couldn’t find whole wheat tortillas at the small town grocery store. I was off my schedule of eating three meals and three snacks a day. The others I was with just didn’t eat that often.

I gave myself permission to let go. Couldn’t remember the last time I’ve had fried food, let alone fried southwestern eggrolls. Yum. I let myself eat a hamburger–and enjoy it. Now before I give the impression it was all eating, I was exercising a lot. My usual 12,000 steps a day turned into 15,000+ with biking and swimming in between. I was active from morning to night. It was great! I felt like I earned the cheating.

So, now I’m back. I’m ready to exercise, eat right. I’m back on the health wagon. I weighed myself today, fearing the worse. Guess what? I gained nothing. I’m still where I was before the cheat week. What’s more, I truly believe this will be the jump start I needed. Yea! for vacations!
