Treating High Blood Pressure

I went for my follow up visit after being diagnosed with high blood pressure. My BP was down, but not enough according to my doctor. So, she put me on a diuretic.

Now this may sound weird, but I was not at all upset about it. If fact, I welcomed it. A little weight loss from taking this med will be most welcome.

I started doing some research on the meds I’m taking. My husband and I are both on Lisinopril. I am also on Hydrochlorothiazide. My husband also takes a beta blocker, but his situation is different.

I would advise anyone to research what they’re taking. I rely only on reputable sites such as WholeHealthMD.com for my information. From reading this site, I learned that taking a magnesium supplement is probably a good idea when taking a diuretic.

Fortunately, I already do. Believe me, if you’ve had issues with migraines, take magnesium. It took several weeks, but I haven’t had a migraine in years. Magnesium also supports your heart.

I can’t say that I’m thrilled about being on meds, but I am grateful there is a solution. I haven’t encountered any side effects either. I know my husband gets colder quicker than I do, sparking the thermostat wars in the winter. That is caused by the beta blocker.

If something good has come out of this, we are walking regularly. We’re back out on the trails and geocaching too when we can. For me, our good health is all the motivation I need.

Complications of High Blood Pressure

Ever since I’ve been diagnosed with high blood pressure, I’ve been conscious of making positive changes in my life. One change is exercise.

My husband and I have started walking. Each night when he comes home, we take a short 20-minute walk. It’s a good time to talk and unwind. I typically have spent the day writing, sitting in a chair. The active time relieves some stress. The best part about it is that it is so motivating for both of us to walk together.

I have to admit being a little spooked about having high blood pressure. Both my parents had it. I’ve read about risk factors such as retinal vein occlusion that frankly, are very frightening. It makes you respect the added trauma you put on your body when your circulatory system is impacted. The thought that my vision, however, could be affected was surprising.

So, along with the exercise, I’ve begun yoga and meditation. I guess I never realized the stress that I was under. Hopefully, now that I’ve quit the day job (thank goodness!), my stress will abate somewhat.

I feel very motivated. I’m hoping that my doctor will be pleased with my progress when I go back in for my follow-up next week.

Seeing Better in 2009

owl Seeing Better in 2009Last week I went in for my annual eye exam.  I actually look forward to it.  I suppose because couldn’t function without my contacts, it’s a given that I’ll be getting the puff in the eyes every year.

Regular exams are part of best way to protect your vision.  Interestingly, eye exams do more for you than get you a new pair of cool glasses.  Your eye doctor can detect signs of diabetes and high blood pressure by an exam of your retinas.

An early sign of diabetes is leaking blood vessels and retinal swelling.  An eye exam checks this without having to open you up to do so.  Seeing as blindness can result from untreated diabetes, diagnosing and treating it early will protect your health.

High blood pressure can also be detected from examination of these blood vessels.  Narrowing of blood vessels or hemorrhages can indicate hypertension.  So while high blood pressure is the “silent” disease, it can be diagnosed easily.

Of course, an eye exam isn’t a replacement for good health care.  The symptoms indicating diabetes and high blood pressure are indicative of damage.  Your eyes have begun to suffer from one or both of these conditions. Your sight is so important.  A healthy lifestyle is key. Photo by foxypar4
