Worst Foods Of 2008

cheeseburger Worst Foods Of 2008There’s the top events of 2008, the best websites for 2008, and the best inventions, the best books, the best movies, the best of just about everything.  There’s a flipside to the best and that’s the worst.  Welcome the worst foods of 2008.

SparkPeople let the restaurant industry have it with both barrels, with a list of the most caloric foods of the year.  We can’t be too surprised about Taco Bell’s 1,390 calorie fully loaded nachos.  Kind of a given, don’t you think?  But what about Starbuck’s signature hot chocolate, weighing in at 430 calories without the whipped cream?

It boils down to choices and educating ourselves.  While nutritional information is usually readily available–except for Olive Garden–the onus is on us.  If we want to eat healthy, we have to make the effort.  Frankly, I have little faith in published information.  After all, it depends on who’s doing the cooking.

My solution is to do the cooking.  I avoid process, packaged, or store made foods. I want to know what I’m eating.  I want to make good choices.  Making my own meals allows me to avoid the worst foods of 2008.  Photo by stu_spivack

No More Excuses. SparkPeople Goes Mobile

2659815920 a6c8c9ba2a No More Excuses. SparkPeople Goes MobileI have written before about one of my favorite fitness sites, SparkPeople.  It’s an amazing site that has caught the attention of the media, including Oprah.

If you haven’t visited the SparkPeople website before, you’re in for a treat.  From exercise calorie counters to a workout generator to an online food journal, the best is here.  The extremely active forums provide plenty of motivation and support.

Now as if it couldn’t get any better, SparkPeople introduced its latest tool for the seeker of a healthy lifestyle.  No more excuses.  SparkPeople goes mobile.

I tried out the site on my Blackberry.  From the mobile site, you can access your cardio log and food journal.  You can also look up foods.  Probably a good thing to do before you order dessert.

Studies have confirmed the value of keeping a food journal.  It’s hard to deny the facts when they’re staring you down.  While I don’t keep an active journal now, when my clothes start to get a little tight, I journal for a couple of days to identify the problems.

Having a journal when I’m on the go is a godsend. No doubt about it.  No more excuses.  SparkPeople just saw to that. Photo by hummyhummy

Another Good Free Site

When one gets involved with fitness and starts surfing for sites on the Internet, you’re likely to come across dozens and dozens of pay sites that offer varying degrees of features. I tried a few, but haven’t stuck with any particular one for any length of time. I tried the sites for a way to track my fitness, the tools they offered, and the support of the forums though the latter is the least important of my reasons.

One free site I’ve come across is MapMyWalk. This isn’t a site to food journal nor to get meal plans. It’s about recording your activities whether they be walking, running, biking (MapMyRun, MapMyRide, etc…), or gym activities like weight training. You can track your weight loss and total calories burned. All in all a helpful site that just keeps getting better and better–and it’s FREE.

I must digress one moment. I used to use CoolRunning.com as a site to record my progress to running a 5k. They had a free program that was perfect for me. Unfortunately, it was bought out by Active.com now the same free program costs $19.95. Please! What makes it so ridiculous is that you can get some of the exact same features on MapMyWalk for FREE.

Let me explain. One of the really cool features of MapMyWalk is the ability to map your actual route on a map, calculate the distance, view it in as a satellite image or hybrid. You can then save it and add to your training as a regular route you use. You can do that too on Active.com for $9.95 a month. Sorry, back to your regularly scheduled program.

In addition to MapMyWalk, SparkPeople provides a free food journal, workout journal with videos and full workout videos. The amount of information is staggering. The forums are extremely active. Just a word of caution; take a look around before you lay out any cash.
