Winter Is No Excuses For Not Exercising

I’m sure a lot of you struggle with exercising during the winter. It’s all warm and cozy in the house. The furnace is on. There’s some hot tea or coffee brewing. Why go outside? Here are some reasons not to skimp on your exercise routine.

It’s too cold.
As long as there are not severe wind chills, you can manage. Hats and gloves along with some nice warm long underwear, and you’re set to go. Besides, you’ll burn more calories trying to keep warm.

It’s too icy.
Sure, the sidewalks may be icy, but there are ways around it. YakTrax are one option. YaxTrax fit over your shoes, giving you added traction. They’re nice because they’re lightweight and easy to slip on or off.

It’s too dark.
Well, granted, your morning routine may be upset by the short days. If you walk later in the day, you can negate the first two excuses. After the sun has been up a bit, it’s warmer and less icy.

An added bonus of winter exercise is the other opportunities it gives you for exercising. There’s cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. Now, if you want a total workout, either of these activities will fit the bill. Even if you’re just going out to clear the drive, shoveling gives you quite a workout too.

The point is that just because it’s not shorts weather, you can still get your workouts in. If you don’t want to be outside, head out to the local gym. Some gyms offer month-to-month or trial contracts. It should be enough to get you through the coldest days. The important thing to remember is that if you have a routine in place, don’t break the momentum. Use the momentum you’ve built up to power your workout.

Finding Joy in Winter

Minnesotans are a hardy bunch. Where else are you likely to see a group of friends huddled around a fire pit on the patio in the middle of winter sharing stories? Where else will you hear someone say, “Thank goodness it’s snowing?” There is an entirely different mindset here. Winter isn’t the end of the outdoor entertaining season. Rather it’s an opportunity.

Outdoor fire pits and lawn furniture get year round use in the “land of 10,000 lakes.” Why should you only enjoy a fire in the summer or fall? Winter is the perfect time to be outside. There are no bugs, no mosquitoes. Sure, there is no boating, but there is snowmobiling or ice boating to fill the niche. The snow creates a wonderful wintry landscape. It’s quiet. It’s downright beautiful after a snowfall. Sure, there’s a chill in the air, but what better way to embrace the season than to curl up around a blazing fire, enjoying its warmth and fragrance?

I suspect that there are much lower rates of seasonal affective disorder in the North Country. The residents welcome winter rather than disdain it. How can you dislike winter with all of its new activities.Winter means sledding, ice fishing, and cross country skiing. It is a hike on snow-covered trail. It is a hayride with marshmallows and hot chocolate as you gather around roaring fires in fire pits. Winter is the chance to enjoy the outdoors in new and exciting ways.

Winter is not just about icy roads and frost-covered windshields. It is about enjoying the season, making the most out it, and finding ways to enjoy it. Winter is not going to go away just because you don’t like it. Winter will come and go each year as it always does, snow and all. Rather than wasting precious time complaining, put on your mittens and hat and get outside.

Walking In the Snow

It was impossible to pass up being outdoors this past weekend. Temperatures shot up into the 30s. I almost could have gone without a coat. Funny, while watching the Weather Channel over the weekend, I noticed that wind chill alerts were posted in Texas because the winds that 53 degree night were driving the “wind chills” down to 36 degrees. Just depends upon your perspective, I guess.

We took to the trails on a sunny winter afternoon. Our usual trail, while still open to walkers, becomes a main artery for snowmobile traffic. The snowmobiles packed the snow down on the trail, however, challenges awaited us. We didn’t walk long, maybe a half hour or so. The walking, though, was through some deeper areas of snow, churned up by snowmobile traffic. A walk that is a breeze on a warm spring day was more of a workout. All this is good. We didn’t stay out long, but the added resistance of the snow made our cardio effort that much better. Stay indoors during the winter? No way!
