How to Set Weight Loss Goals That Work

upper body workout 248x300 How to Set Weight Loss Goals That WorkI don’t know about you, but reading that over two-thirds of Americans are overweight is depressing. What’s even more distressing is that I am one of them. That’s why I am determined to reverse that and get back to a normal weight. For me, it was a lack of activity that set me on this trend. Now, I have to make exercise a priority. I have to embrace the strategy I used a couple of years ago to get back in shape. This is how I did it.

Regular exercise

The foundation of my success was walking, simply, walking. We live in the country, so there are plenty of interesting rural roads to walk. There are also lots of walking paths. On a side note, walking turned out to be profitable. I found more money walking here in Minnesota that I ever have. I also found a wrist GPS unit. Who knows? Maybe I’ll get lucky again.

Regular check-ins

I am motivated when I see results. I did weekly weigh-ins and measurements. I kept a spreadsheet that showed my total inches lost. Seeing that figure get bigger and bigger kept me on track. Keeping that log was key to the success of this aspect of my weight loss plan.

Strength training sessions

I did  whole body strength training sessions each week. It was nothing fancy, just 8 to 10 exercises that worked all the major muscle groups. Again, I kept track of my weights. The big motivating factor here was seeing the definition develop in my biceps and triceps. I never want to have flabby arms.

The plan worked because I was doing something positive each day. It then became a habit. I became my own best personal trainer when it got to that point. I hated missing a walk or workout.

That would be my challenge to you and myself again now. Stick with an exercise plan for one month. Let your mind make it essential. You’ll achieve your fitness goals by taking the first step.

Motivational Tip: Get It Done First

Today’s motivational tip is about staying on track. It’s easy to get distracted. Estimates say that a distraction such as a phone call, visit, etc., can eat up about 20 minutes from your work. It takes that long to get back on track and into your momentum again.

If you exercise in the middle of the day, chances are you’re creating a distraction. While breaks are good, if you’re in a time crunch that break has to be calculated. I’m not sure who said this, but the best break is a change of work. So, what about your exercising?

Exercising involves its own mindset. You’re perhaps focused on your breathing or your form. It’s more of a right-brain practice maybe than a left-brain one. Rather than try to switch gears during the day, begin your day with your exercise. Use the time to plan your day, decide on your goals for the day. It’s a good opportunity to pick up some bonus motivation. Maybe you’re running faster, longer. You’ve added some reps. Positive reinforcements, to say nothing of the endorphins, will set your day on a good tone. If you’ve done anything that day, you’ve invested time in your health. And that’s a good thing.

My Kind of Town, Chicago Is

I recently returned from a trip to Illinois, my home state. It was nice to be back in the state of Lincoln, the home of the windy city, Chicago.

I grew up in a suburb of Chicago. What a great town! How many places have the history–good and bad–that Chicago has? I remember telling a friend once where I lived. He asked if there were still gangsters. Well, not shooting in the streets anyway, I replied. That aside, it’s the town of great restaurants, entertaining baseball, Lake Michigan. If I weren’t so happy in the land of 10,000 lakes, I might be tempted to look into Chicago jobs.

Visiting Illinois reminded me of the different mindsets of that state and Minnesota. Today, we’re setting a record low temperature of -4 degrees. People will grumble, but then they’ll pick up their hockey sticks, or put on their skis, or get in their snowmobiles and just embrace the day. That’s what I really like about Minnesota. Weather just doesn’t get in the way of outdoor recreation.

Herein lies an important lesson for those traveling the road to wellness. There’s nothing we can do about the weather if the outdoors figures in your workout plans.  Prepare for the day and get out there! Your kind of town is your town.
