The Best Way To Relax

I was first introduced into the lovely world of saunas in Sweden. I lived there as an exchange student in high school. The Swedish family I lived with had one in their home. I remember gathering in the sauna with my Swedish mother, father, brother, and sister and relaxing in the sauna. What an experience!

The idea of just sitting and sweating didn’t sound appealing, but the sense of relaxation that washed over me was incredible. Later, I joined health clubs because they had saunas. When traveling, if the hotel had a sauna, I was there. It began a lifelong love affair.

Saunas can be either conventional saunas that warm the air like a conventional oven or the infrared saunas that warms objects like charcoal or other things. The type I enjoyed was the infrared sauna.

I found that I enjoyed the sauna best after exercising. My muscles were all warmed up anyway. I wouldn’t stay long, maybe 10 minutes. There was the cool shower afterwards. The one thing I did notice was that I didn’t experience post-exercise soreness if I took a sauna. When you’re weightlifting that is a huge benefit.

Evidence suggest it has other benefits too. The relaxation, of course, helps to relieve stress. Some studies also suggest regular sauna sessions may lower blood pressure. All I know is that made me feel good. And that sounds like a great idea about now.
